There are several ways to send money from Europe to Georgia in 2026, but they differ in speed, fees, exchange rates and convenience. In this article, we look at the main options available today: bank transfers, online services, cash pick-ups and crypto transfers. After finishing reading, you’ll know exactly how to send money to Georgia step by step.

Ways to send money from Europe to Georgia

Banks, online services, cash and even cryptocurrency can all be used to move money between Europe and Georgia. But ‘possible’ and ‘practical’ are two different things.

If you are sending money home regularly, there are four things worth comparing from the start:

  • fee,
  • exchange rate,
  • delivery time,
  • amount your recipient gets.

The last one is particularly important. A transfer promoted with a zero fee isn’t always the least expensive if the exchange rate is less favourable.

Let’s have a look at the most popular options for transfers from Europe to Georgia.

Bank transfers

International bank transfers are one of the most traditional ways to send money abroad. If both you and your recipient already have bank accounts, the method may seem like the obvious choice. However, international bank transfers may take several days, require many details and be costly.

Required details

Depending on your bank and the recipient’s bank, you may need to provide quite a collection of details for the SWIFT network:

  • the recipient’s full name;
  • their account number or IBAN;
  • the bank name;
  • the bank’s SWIFT/BIC code;
  • sometimes the recipient’s address or additional payment information.

Costs

Your bank may charge a transfer fee, use its own EUR/GEL exchange rate and, in some cases, apply additional intermediary or recipient-bank charges.

For example, imagine you’re sending 500 EUR:

  • Bank transfer: 5 EUR fee, exchange rate of 1 EUR = 3.00 GEL → your recipient gets around 1,485 GEL.
  • Money transfer service: 2 EUR fee, exchange rate of 1 EUR = 3.06 GEL → your recipient gets around 1,524 GEL.

So even though the bank charges only 3 EUR more in fees, the recipient ends up with almost 40 GEL less because of the exchange rate.

Costs and complexity don’t make bank transfers a bad option. Banks can be particularly useful for larger amounts or transfers between your own accounts. But if someone in Georgia needs money urgently, there are better alternatives.

Cash transfers

Cash pick-up is still a useful option if your recipient prefers cash or doesn’t have a suitable bank card or account.

Services such as Western Union and MoneyGram allow you to send money from Europe and have it collected in cash at an available location in Georgia. The advantages are obvious: no bank account is needed, and the recipient gets physical cash. The downsides are just as obvious:

  • the recipient has to travel to a pick-up point;
  • opening hours may matter;
  • picking up cash isn’t really safe;
  • fees and exchange rates vary by service and route.

You can try the truly old-fashioned option: giving cash to a friend or relative travelling to Georgia. It can work, but you depend on somebody else’s plans, there is no tracking, and larger amounts may need to be declared at the border.

Crypto transfers

Cryptocurrency can be legally bought, sold and transferred in Georgia, but for everyday spending, your recipient will need to convert crypto into GEL anyway.

First, you need to buy crypto with euros or another currency. Then you send it to the recipient’s wallet or exchange account. Finally, the recipient converts crypto into GEL.

Each step may come with additional costs:

  • card or deposit fees;
  • trading fees;
  • blockchain network fees;
  • exchange-rate spreads;
  • withdrawal or conversion fees.

If both you and your recipient already use crypto, the process will feel familiar. If not, setting up wallets and exchanges just to send money home is way too much of an effort.

Online money transfer services

Sending money with online services is generally simpler. You enter how much you want to send, choose Georgia as the destination, add the recipient details and select your payment method.

Online services are also faster than banks. With Profee, for example, 95% of transfers arrive within a few minutes.

KoronaPay (Zolotaya Korona)

KoronaPay deserves a separate mention because it used to be a familiar option for many people transferring money across Europe and the CIS. Not anymore.  As of August 2026, KoronaPay's European money transfer service is unavailable for new transfers. The company's European website currently states that customers can only refund transfers that were previously sent through the Korona mobile app.

So, if KoronaPay was your usual way of sending money, you’ll need to switch to another service for transfers from Europe to Georgia. Such as Profee.

  • You see the transfer details upfront. The calculator shows the exchange rate, fee and the amount your recipient is expected to get before you confirm the transfer.
  • Transfers are fast. More than 95% of Profee transfers arrive within minutes, although the exact timing depends on the payment and receiving methods.
  • There are several ways to pay. You can use a bank card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Profee wallet or local payment methods.

Pitfalls to avoid when sending money to Georgia

Not checking which currency the recipient receives

Even though Georgia's national currency is the Georgian lari, or GEL, the receiving options available for a particular transfer may vary. Before sending, check:

  • which currency you are paying in;
  • which currency the transfer is being converted into;
  • how much the recipient gets;
  • whether their chosen card or account can receive the transfer.

This is important if your recipient uses accounts in more than one currency.

Assuming “instant” always means instant

A transfer may occasionally require additional security or compliance checks. The recipient's bank can also affect processing.

If the money is needed for something with a hard deadline – rent, a bill or an urgent purchase, for example – sending it a little earlier is better than watching a loading screen at 23:57.

Forgetting about transfer limits

Your bank, card issuer, money transfer service or receiving institution may all have their own limits.

With Profee, the minimum transfer is 10 EUR (or equivalent) and the maximum per transfer is 15,000 EUR (or equivalent). Your yearly limits depend on your profile level, bank and destination and can reach up to 100,000 EUR.

So if you are planning to send a substantial amount, check both your Profee limit and your bank or card limits beforehand.

Leaving verification until an urgent transfer

Verification requirements are affected by your profile level and transfer amount. If you start sending larger amounts, services may ask for additional information or documents.

If you know you’ll send a larger amount soon, check your profile in advance. There is nothing particularly complicated about verification, but you should deal with it before the transfer becomes urgent.
