Student residence permit in Germany: Requirements, application, and renewal in 2026

Most non-EU students need a German student residence permit (Aufenthaltserlaubnis). It’s issued for two or three years and can be renewed. To apply, you have to collect proof of enrollment, health insurance, a valid passport, and proof of your German address. You also need enough money to support yourself. Who needs a student residence permit in Germany?

Most students from outside the EU, EEA, and Switzerland need a residence permit to study in Germany.  

What about student visas? International students need to get a national student visa before travelling to Germany. However, citizens of:

EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens don’t need a student visa and a standard student residence permit to study in Germany.

Is a student visa the same as a residence permit?

Visa and residence permit (Aufenthaltserlaubnis) are different: a national student visa (D visa) allows you to enter Germany, while the resident permit – to live for your studies. The visa isn’t automatically converted into a residence permit. After arriving in Germany, you have to apply separately at your local Foreigners Authority (Ausländerbehörde).

If your nationality allows you to enter visa-free, you can skip this step and apply for the permit right away.

How do you apply for a student residence permit?

To apply for a residence permit, you should register your address (Anmeldung), submit documents, and pay a 100 EUR fee (as of 2026). The exact process details depend on your city, but the main steps are the same.

1. Check whether you need a visa

Before travelling, confirm whether your nationality requires a national D visa or allows you to enter Germany visa-free. For official and proven information, use the Federal Foreign Office visa overview, not a university blog or relocation website. If you need a visa, complete that process before travelling. If you can enter visa-free, note the deadline for applying for your residence permit after arrival.

2. Register your address in Germany

After moving in, arrange your Anmeldung with the local registration office – you have two weeks after moving in to register (under Section 17 of the Federal Registration Act, deadlines may change).

Ask your landlord, main tenant, or student residence for a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung before your Anmeldung appointment. This is the official confirmation that you have moved into the address; a rental contract alone isn’t always enough for registration. After the appointment, keep the Meldebestätigung you receive from the registration office. The document proves your registered address in Germany and may be handy when you apply for your student residence permit.

3. Check your local application process

Go to the website of the Foreigners Authority responsible for your registered address and follow its instructions exactly. Every city runs this differently, so the submission method, required documents, processing time, and whether you book an appointment yourself or wait to be contacted all vary.

For example, in Berlin, you must apply online, upload your documents, pay the fee, and then wait for the LEA to review your case and send you an appointment. In Munich, you can apply online or by post, and the immigration authority contacts you about the next steps after reviewing your application. The processing time can also be very different depending on the city.

4. Prepare your documents

For a first student residence permit, get a valid passport, university admission or enrolment proof, and other documents proving that your stay in Germany will be legal and comfortable. These documents cover the main eligibility requirements for a student residence permit. Your local Foreigners Authority may ask for additional documents, but the standard checklist is:

• completed residence permit application
• valid passport
• D visa, if you needed one to enter Germany
• university admission letter or enrolment certificate (Immatrikulationsbescheinigung)
• proof of health insurance
• proof of financial resources, such as a blocked account, scholarship, or Declaration of Commitment
• proof of your German address, such as your Meldebestätigung
• current digital biometric photo

Students under 18 may need consent from a parent or guardian, while renewal applicants may need a transcript of records or another document showing study progress. Check the current eligibility requirements on your local authority’s website before submitting.

5. Submit the application before your legal stay expires

Submit your residence permit application before your current legal stay in Germany ends. If you entered with a D visa, you must apply before the visa expires. If you entered Germany without a visa and are allowed to apply after arrival, you normally have 90 days from the date you entered Germany.

Keep the confirmation that your application was submitted on time.

6. Complete the appointment and collect your permit

After reviewing your application, the Foreigners Authority may ask you to attend an appointment to verify your passport, check original documents, collect biometric data, or request missing information. The standard first-issue fee for an adult student residence permit is 100 EUR (as of 2026, fees may be increased in the future). Once your application is approved, your electronic residence permit (eAT) still needs to be produced, so you won’t usually receive the physical card straight away.

How much money do you need?

To get a student residence permit, you need to show that you can cover your living costs – 992 per month EUR, or 11,904 EUR per year (as of 2026, verify official financial requirements before applying; amounts subject to change annually). You may be able to prove this with:

• a blocked account (Sperrkonto)
• a scholarship
• a Declaration of Commitment (Verpflichtungserklärung)
• financial support from your parents
• income from a job, where accepted
• another form of funding accepted by your Foreigners Authority

A blocked account is the most common option. You deposit money into a special account and can access only a limited amount each month. There’s no official list of approved blocked-account providers, so you need to choose one yourself. Compare the fees, account conditions, and how the money will be paid out before opening an account.

What health insurance do you need?

You need health insurance accepted by the Foreigners Authority, and travel insurance is usually not enough for a student residence permit. As a solution, students get German public health insurance, although private insurance can also be accepted if it provides adequate coverage.

Some countries have a social security agreement with Germany; in such cases, your home insurance may count. Use TK as an online service to verify whether your current insurance passes or not.

How do you renew a student residence permit?

To renew, you need proof of enrollment, valid health insurance, a passport, your registered address, and enough money to support yourself for another year. From the fourth semester onwards, most authorities also want evidence that your studies are moving forward: a performance overview, exam results, or a study forecast, depending on what your local office asks for.

If it’s taking longer for you to graduate – for example, you have failed some exams, changed your study plan, or simply need an extra semester – your university must confirm that you have a realistic path to graduation. A letter explaining what you have completed and when you expect to finish should be enough, but the exact document varies.

The extension fee for an eAT valid for more than three months is 93 EUR as of 2026. Fees are updated periodically; always check the current amount on your local authority's website before applying.

Can you work with a student residence permit?

Yes, international students can work for up to 140 full working days per year (under  Section 16b of the Residence Act).

During the semester, there is also a weekly way to count your work: you can work up to 20 hours per week. Jobs directly connected to your university are treated differently. When you work as a student or research assistant at your university, those hours don’t count towards the 140-day annual limit.

Before taking a job, check the conditions written on your residence permit or supplementary sheet, including any working hours restrictions, so you know exactly what kind of work you are allowed to do.

Can you freelance or be self-employed?

Freelancing and self-employment are not automatically permitted under a student residence permit – you need to check the conditions on your permit and, in some cases, get approval from your local Foreigners Authority before starting. What you can do depends on what is written on your permit.

In Berlin, for example, students can have self-employment as a secondary activity. So if you plan to take freelance work or start a business, check what your permit says and ask your Foreigners Authority before you start working.
