What is MIA?
MIA is a payment account connected to one’s phone number, licensed and regulated by the National Bank of Moldova. MIA Instant Payments were officially launched on March 12, 2024. Two years later, almost 50% of Moldova’s adult population were using the service. It is quickly becoming the standard way people send and receive money in the country.
“I am confident that MIA will soon become a technology available to every citizen or businessperson. MIA will streamline financial transactions, stimulate economic growth and promote better financial management." — Anca Dragu, the Governor of the National Bank of Moldova
Why is MIA popular in Moldova?
MIA is a go-to solution for people in Moldova thanks to its simplicity, low cost, and high speed.
Here's what makes it stand out for Moldovans:
No extra details needed. One only needs a Moldovan phone number and a bank account to get started. Forget extra paperwork, and scheduling visits to a bank office.
It's instant. Money arrives within seconds, to any payment account in the country, 24/7.
It's low cost. Transfers up to 10,000 MDL (slightly less than 500 EUR) per month carry no commission, and for larger amounts, fees never exceed 5 MDL per transfer.
It works across all banks. MIA allows instant transfers between accounts and mobile apps of all commercial banks and non-banking institutions in Moldova — so it doesn't matter which bank the person you're sending money to uses.

How to start using MIA?
If your friend or relative hasn't used MIA before, they needs to adjust the settings in their Moldovan bank’s app to get money from you.
Here is what someone in Moldova needs to do to synchronise a bank account with MIA
- Go to their bank’s app;
- Go to MIA Settings;
- Select their default account in Moldovan leu (MDL).
A user can link several bank accounts in Moldovan Leu to the MIA account. If several accounts are linked, they should choose one as primary. They can change the primary account any time. For receiving money, choosing MIA as a preferred option in the bank’s app is enough.

What does MIA offer Moldovans?
MIA supports six key features in 2026: person-to-person transfers, request to pay, me2me transfers, payments to businesses via QR, business-to-business settlements, and person-to-government payments such as taxes and fines.
Person-to-person (P2P) transfers
P2P transfers allow Moldovans to send money instantly to anyone in their contact list or by manually entering a phone number (+373). Funds arrive in the recipient's account in under 10 seconds. The transfers are available 24/7: if someone needs money urgently, their friend can send an instant transfer in a few taps. We’ve already mentioned the fees: up to 10,000 Moldovan Leu a month is fee-free, with relatively small additional fees for transfers beyond this limit.
Request to pay (RTP)
RTP allows MIA users to receive money from someone they know. If they need money urgently, or split a bill with friends, they may send a payment request to the phone number of a friend.
The request is valid for 24 hours – if the money isn’t sent by the time, a new request will be needed. If someone gets an RTP via MIA, they may either pay it or reject it (for example, if the amount is wrong or if they get a request from someone they do not know by mistake).
Me2Me transfers
Me2Me helps MIA users to manage money seamlessly across all their accounts. If they have accounts at different banks (e.g., maib and Victoriabank), they can move funds between these accounts instantly. MIA offers its users one interface for checking their balances and moving money between them – no need to switch between two or more apps.
Payments to businesses (P2B / QR)
MIA has replaced the need for physical cards in many retail environments.
- Static QR codes: Found at checkout counters or markets; one can scan the code and enter the amount.
- Dynamic QR codes: Generated by a seller (or another individual) for a specific amount; one can scan and confirm.
- Payment by link: Used primarily for local e-commerce. One can click a "Pay with MIA" link, select the bank, and the app opens automatically to authorise the payment.
Business-to-Business (B2B)
The Business-to-Business (B2B) feature was released in March 2026 to make managing finances easier for Moldovan businesses. Companies can settle invoices, pay advances, or unlock deliveries in real-time, even on weekends.
- High limits: Compared to personal limits, B2B transactions allow for much larger volumes (often up to 500,000 MDL per transaction depending on the bank).
- Transparent fees: Capped at 0.7% or a maximum of 40 MDL per transaction, making it cheaper than many traditional corporate transfer methods.
Person-to-Government (P2G)
If you live outside Moldova, you can send money to yourself via MIA and complete the necessary payments you have at home. These include property taxes, road taxes, traffic fines, and other state services. Unlike traditional bank transfers that could take a business day to reflect in government systems, MIA P2G updates your "paid" status almost immediately.
