Pakistanis moving to UK: Visas & embassies guide

Relocation to the UK is a massive life-changing journey. It involves navigating two very different bureaucratic worlds, which can feel a bit overwhelming at first. Whether you are applying for your very first visa in Islamabad or trying to manage your ID documents once you get to the UK, understanding how these offices work is the secret to a smooth move.

Before you move: Securing your UK visa in Pakistan

If you're moving for a new job, to study, or to join your family, your main point of contact is the British High Commission  in Pakistan. However, you won't actually go there to hand over your passport. That part – the physical document submission – is handled by their partner, VFS Global.

Tips:

Entry clearance preparation: Visa categories and documentations

Before starting the entry clearance process and bringing your documents to VFS Global, you should understand which visa category suits your goals:

We’ve attached the links to the official British Government website – so, if you haven’t explored visa documentation requirements yet, click on them to do so.

Visa application

Most of the work actually happens online before you even step into a visa centre. Here is what the process of a UK visa application looks like in 2026:

  1. Start on GOV.UK. This is the only official place to begin. You’ll create an account, pick your visa type (like Skilled Worker or Student), and fill out the form.
  2. Pay the fees. You’ll need a valid credit or debit card. You have to pay the visa fee first, and if you’re staying for more than six months, you’ll also pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS). This fee lets you use the NHS once you arrive.
  3. Book a VFS Global appointment. Once you’ve paid on the government site, it will send you to the VFS Global website. This is where you pick a date and city (Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, or Mirpur) to complete the biometric enrollment (give your fingerprints and photo).
  4. Upload your papers. You can actually scan and upload your supporting documents yourself on the VFS website from home. It’s usually free and much easier than carrying a heavy folder to your appointment.

Visa rules and embassy procedures change frequently. All information in this guide is current as of March 18th, 2026. Verify current requirements and procedures directly with UKVI, the British High Commission Pakistan, or VFS Global Pakistan before submitting applications.

Checking your visa status

Once you’ve given your biometrics (fingerprints and photo), the waiting game begins. Usually, the processing times take about 3 weeks for work or study visas, but family visas can take around 12 weeks, according to the GOV.UK. You can keep an eye on things in three ways:

  • VFS Global portal. Use your Unique Reference Number (GWF) and your last name on their tracking page.
  • Email updates. You should get automated notes when they receive your application and when they finally make a decision.
  • Paid inquiry service (UKVI). If things are taking longer than the standard time, you can contact UK Visas and Immigration. Just a heads-up: currently, they charge about 2.74 GBP per email.

The UK has mostly moved to eVisas – Biometric residence permits have expired since 2024. So, you might not even get a physical sticker in your passport anymore. Instead, your status is linked digitally to your passport number.

After you move: Your connection to Pakistan in the UK

Once you’ve landed and settled into your new UK life, your relationship with the High Commission of Pakistan in London becomes very important as it handles the consular services for Pakistanis abroad. Even if you don't think you’ll be heading home anytime soon, you will probably need them for legal or paperwork reasons eventually.

When you might need to visit the High Commission

There are a few formalities that usually require you to show up in person or get papers stamped:

  1. NADRA and passport renewals abroad. If your NICOP (that’s your identity card for overseas Pakistanis) or Pakistani passport validity is about to expire, this is where you go to renew it.
  2. Power of attorney. Need to sell a house or manage a bank account back in Pakistan while you're in the UK? You’ll need the High Commission to attest your legal documents.
  3. Birth registration. If you have a baby born in the UK, you must register them here so they are recognised as a Pakistani citizen.

Where to find the High Commission of Pakistan

  • Main office (London): 35–36 Lowndes Square, London SW1X 9JN.
  • Consulates: You can also find services in Birmingham, Manchester, Bradford, and Glasgow.

It’s always a good idea to know where your national representatives are, just in case of an emergency, like if you lose your passport or need help.

Document attestation and legalisation of Pakistani documents

Attestation proves that your papers are genuine. If you’ve already moved to the UK, this can be a bit tricky because the High Commission in London generally doesn't do the initial attestation – it has to happen back in Pakistan.

  • Degrees and diplomas. These must first be verified by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in Pakistan. You can start this online through the HEC e-portal, but the physical documents usually need to be sent to them.
  • School certificates. For Matric or Inter certificates, you’ll need a stamp from the IBCC (Inter Board Coordination Commission).
  • Marriage and birth certificates. These need to be the computerised versions from NADRA. You’ll have to get them attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) in Pakistan.
  • Police character certificates. If a UK employer asks for one from Pakistan, it usually needs a MOFA stamp to be accepted.

When already in the UK

You can send your original documents back to a trusted family member or friend in Pakistan via a secure courier (like DHL) and have them visit the offices for you. Alternatively, you can use professional attestation services that handle the whole back-and-forth.

Always keep high-quality digital scans of your original documents and the attested versions. You never know when you’ll need to email a copy while the originals are tucked away in a safe place.

Practical tips for expats

  • Book appointments. The London office works mostly by appointment. Don’t just show up unless you’re a senior citizen (over 65) or have a real, documented emergency.
  • Use the NADRA app. Here is a little secret: many ID services, like applying for NICOP registration or renewal, can be done on the "Pak Identity" mobile app. It saves you a long trip to London.
  • Double holidays. Remember, embassies stay closed for both UK bank holidays and Pakistani national holidays. Whether it’s Pakistan Day on March 23rd or Eid, always check their calendar before you travel.
  • Original ID is a must. When you go to the High Commission in London for passport or legal services, you must bring your original, valid NADRA card (NICOP). If it’s expired, you usually have to book an appointment to fix the ID card first before they can help you with anything else.
  • English translations. If you have documents in Urdu – like a Nikah Nama (marriage certificate) or property papers – you can't just hand them over as they are. You need to get them translated by a certified translator. It’s better to get this done well in advance so you aren't rushing at the last minute.

FAQ – Relocation to the UK

How many Pakistani embassies are there in the UK?

There are five Pakistani embassies in the UK in 2026: The main High Commission in London, along with four consulates general located in Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, and Bradford.

What is the Indefinite Leave to Remain?

Think of Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) as your "forever" visa. It means you can stay, work, and study in the UK without any more time limits or extensions. Usually, you can apply for this after living here legally for five years (as of March 2026).

What is an attestation service?

This is a service that helps you prove your Pakistani documents are genuine. Since the UK government often requires stamps from authorities back in Pakistan, these services handle the back-and-forth for you. It’s a lifesaver if you can't travel home to stand in line at government offices.

Can I appeal a UK visa refusal decision?

It really depends on the type of visa you applied for. Under current immigration law, some refusals allow for a full appeal, while others only let you ask for an "Administrative Review" to fix a mistake. If you don't have these rights, your best bet is usually to fix the errors and just submit a new application.

What’s the difference between a consulate and an embassy?

The embassy is the main "headquarters" located in the capital city, like London. Consulates are like smaller branch offices in other big cities that focus on helping you directly with everyday things – like renewing your passport or getting documents stamped.
